Big Hill Pond State Park Campground

Big Hill Pond State Park is known for its popular fishing lake, boardwalk and campsites. The State of Tennessee wanted to provide ADA accessible campgrounds and bathrooms as well. ABES Contracting was the prime contractor for this project, which included demolition of the existing campground and a complete renovation of every campsite as well as the existing bathroom building.

The construction began with the installation of erosion control devices and BMPs across the existing site before site demolition began. The site demo included removing over 300 trees, the existing timber retaining walls, and timber railings and fences as well as the existing concrete and asphalt. The site was completely regraded and new stormwater inlets and piping were installed. The footprint of each campsite was enlarged to allow more space for RVs and travel trailers. A new asphalt roadway was installed throughout the campsite and new asphalt and concrete parking spaces were provided at the campsites.

New water, sewer, and electrical hookups were added at each site as well as new site amenities including a fire ring, picnic table, and grill. In addition to installing a sewer collection system, a septic system was installed to treat the sewage onsite. A new 6” water line was installed in a loop around the site with service hydrants at each campsite.

The project included a comprehensive renovation of the existing bathroom building. Both the interior and exterior of the building were demolished, leaving only the structure. The interior renovation included all new plumbing and drain lines as well as a reconfiguration of the toilets, sinks, and showers. New ceramic tile and partitions were also installed. The exterior renovation included new siding, stone work, parging, and painting.

A new pavilion and playground was installed adjacent to the existing bathroom building. To enhance the aesthetics of the campsite, a fenced dumpster pad was installed as well as new signage and landscaping.
