Project – Oakhaven Streetscape
Oakhaven Streetscape
This project will enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection of Shelby Drive (State Route 175) and Tchulahoma Road. At the intersection, Tchulahoma widens from a 2-lane to a 4-lane section. It is assumed this was done to allow for future roadway widening. However, it appears that current traffic volume does not warrant the planned widening. Due to the width of the roadway, crosswalks are unnecessarily long and the extra space allows cars to deviate from the marked lanes. This project narrowed the intersection by installing plazas in the extra right-of-way and narrowing Tchulahoma to a two-lane layout at the intersection. New sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps and brick pillars with signs marking the “Oakhaven” neighborhood are all features that make the intersection safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The new signs and landscaping also create the feeling of a gateway to the community and are definitely an aesthetic improvement. The work also included installing a new mast-arm type traffic signal at the intersection. ABES managed five subcontractors on this project: traffic control, demo/concrete work, landscaping, roadway striping, and electrical (traffic signals).
