ARPA Sewage Pump Station Rehab
ARPA Sewage Pump Station Rehab
Shelby County Government owns/operates the sewage collection system for unincorporated Shelby County. The County utilized funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to improve four sewage pumping stations: Sledge Road Pumping Station PS, Armour Road PS, Chartridge PS, and Mt. Pisgah PS.
The existing Sledge Road PS utilized suction lift pumps and had a concrete wet well. The improvements included completely removing the existing wet well and pumps and installing a new fiberglass wet well and submersible pumps. This required an excavation of over 20’. A new concrete base was poured to anchor the new fiberglass wet well and the existing sewer line was connected to the new wet well. A new pre-manufactured above-ground valve vault was installed along with a flow meter in a pre-cast concrete vault. A new manhole had to be installed over the existing gravity line to provide a bypassing structure. The site improvements included a bypass pumping connection, gravel paving, and fencing.
The Armour Road PS was an in-ground “metal can station” with pump below grade, but the pumps were suction-lift. The project included removing the existing metal pump station enclosure as well as the existing wet well. A new fiberglass wet well was installed along with new submersible pumps. Precast vaults for the valves and flow meter as well as a guardrail to protect the site from the adjacent roadway were installed. Replacement of some 8” gravity sewer pipe from an existing manhole to the new wet well was also added during the project.

Improvement to the Mt Pisgah PS involved elimination of the pump station and installation of a new gravity sewer line to replace the pumps. The new 8” gravity line crossed under a county road, and there were several existing utilities in the roadway. Additionally, the pipe was over 18’ deep under the roadway. A subcontractor performed the 300’ of directional drilling and ABES Contracting connected the new pipe to the existing manhole and installed the remaining 400’ of sewer line and the manholes. ABES demolished and removed the existing pump station and restored the site. The new gravity line ran along the border of an elementary school, so ABES coordinated with the school administration to minimize interruptions and maintain the flow of traffic.
Improvements at the Chartridge PS included the installation of a new flow meter in a precast vault and various electrical improvements. This pump station is in the front yard of a home. ABES coordinated with the homeowner and the County to minimize disruptions and impacts to the property.
